A reflection on clarity
Here is one of the most difficult things to achieve as a leader.
Being clear about where you are going, why and how - and in a way that everyone understands and can repeat.
Yet my experience suggests this is the critical foundation for the leader’s effectiveness and the performance of the team or business they lead. Among the many challenges to this are:
Too much knowledge - the expert knows so much about the business that it’s hard to find the essential truth
Too much choice - there are so many options, and no-one wants to eliminate what may be of value, so there is confusion about which way we’re pointing
Too many agendas - as organisations grow different teams and leaders focus on their own aims, deviating from a single central strategy
Too many stories - when you ask a group of leaders from the same organisation the same question, you get very different answers.
The result: different people pointing in different directions, all with the best intention. Confusion becomes the norm and performance is affected.
The solution is Clarity. Easy to say, harder to achieve. Here are 4 minutes with some thoughts on what to do.
